I was given an open brief, except for two factors: I had to reinstate a driveway, as the garage was at the back of the house, and install a path that would lead visitors to the front door, which was about 50 meters from the pedestrian entry on the street. The clients are keen gardeners with a passion for traditional favourites such as heritage roses, lavender, hydrangeas and birch trees, so this was another major consideration.
I visit this garden frequently and it still manages to excite me. Strolling from one ‘room’ to the next, as I make my way from the front gate to the house, always heightens my sense of pleasure.
